An API stands for Application Programming Interface. An SMS API is a well-defined software interface that enables code to send short messages via an SMS Gateway.
Gateway Providers/Aggregators
An SMS gateway allows users to send Short Message Service (SMS) to operators. They have tie-ups with telecom operators, build user-friendly interfaces and offer as services to their clients.
Operators
Operators (like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, JIO, etc) are the first party in the overall Bulk SMS Process. Operators play a key role in sending Bulk SMS without them users can't send SMS. Operators revert confirmation signals to SMS Gateway after delivering messages.
Recipients
They are people with mobile handsets who receive messages.
Sending of bulk SMS through pc / mobile phone:
A defining characteristic of bulk SMS messaging is that businesses and organizations can make use of one or more solutions to send and receive SMS messages, namely; a mobile phone application, a software program, a web interface, or integrate an SMS API with their website or system. These bulk SMS messaging solutions interface with service providers’ SMS gateway to ensure the delivery of messages to mobile phone numbers anywhere in the world.
An SMS gateway acts as a relay between the mobile network operators and a wireless application service provider. These SMS gateways allow for SMS traffic to distributed via a direct connection to the SMSC (Short Message Service Centre) of a mobile network operator and then onto a recipient’s mobile phone number.
