What is SMS?
SMS stands for Short Message Service
SMS commonly refers to "text message," is a service for sending short messages of up to 160 characters.
1. Bulk SMS Idea:
- In 1984, while enjoying a pizza in Copenhagen he pitched the idea of messaging. He is widely considered as the ‘Father of SMS’
- He is widely considered as the ‘Father of SMS’
- He never patented his invention and didn’t make a penny on the product.
- He thinks he didn’t make a “patentable innovation” but was the first one to notice the need and concept.
- He didn’t like to be called as the founder of texting and rarely gave interviews.
2. World’s First SMS:
- The world’s first ever text message was sent on December 3rd, 1992 from a personal computer to Orbital 901 handset.
- The message read "Merry Christmas"
- Sent by - Engineer Neil Papworth.
- Sent to - Richard Jarvis of Vodafone.
- Jarvis was attending his office Christmas party at that time.
3. 160 Characters:
- In the year 1984, Friedhelm Hillebrand (a German Engineer) & Bernand Ghillebaert developed the concept of SMS in the Franco-German GSM cooperation.
- In 1985, Friedhelm Hillebrand conducted experiments to determine the length for a text message and concluded that 160 characters were “Perfectly Sufficient”. Thus it became the standard limit for a single text message.
- A single SMS message has a limit of 160 Characters including spaces.
- Using emoji in single SMS reduce character limit to 70 because of the format changes to UTF-16 which has a limit of 70 characters.
- The maximum length of a text message is 918 characters including spaces.
- Twitter's 140 character limit came from SMS text messaging 160 character limits. However, Twitter expanded the limit for tweets to 280 characters in November 2017.
4. Bulk SMS Marketing:
- Bulk SMS Marketing means using SMS as a marketing channel to reach consumers.
- It is a type of Mobile Marketing.
- A direct, immediate channel which can be highly effective to increase customer engagement and drive conversions.

- The iconic Nokia Text Message Tone is Morse Code for “SMS”
- In 1993, mobile phones got SMS when Nokia introduced the SMS feature on its handsets.

- LOL - Laughing Out Loud, ROFL - Rolling on Floor, Laughing, BTW - By The Way, B4 - Before, AFAIK - As Far As I Know, ASAP- As Soon As Possible. BFF- Best Friend Forever.
